Spotlight – Adene Elizabeth Hulbert resides in Chatterwood

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Milkwood Admin

Adene spent her childhood growing up and working in the Lord George Sangus Circus until the end of the 1950’s travelling all over the British Isles and Ireland. Adene’s father was a clown and ring master and her mother worked behind the scenes. Adene used to erect the big tops, sell programmes and ice-creams, train the dogs and horses which Adene then performed with in the ring. Adene went on to be one of the youngest bare back riders in the 1950s. During the closed circus season, Adene like all circus children, was expected to provide for her family and earn money, so Adene performed in pantomimes, once as Goldilocks. Adene married her husband Laurie in 1962 and went to live in a caravan in Andover. They had 2 children and now have grandchildren. Adene & Laurie spent their holidays caravanning in England and Scotland. Adene went back to work after her children were born and worked in a department store, making parts for Dimplex heaters in a factory. She was a dinner lady at the school her children attended. Adene enjoyed arts and crafts, line dancing and knitting and used to knit squares for the Southampton Hospital Maternity Unit. Adene loves Christmas, but not the snow, she still loves all animals and is mad about owls.
